Reflections

In this assignment, you will reflect on three questions regarding your future in light of your whirlwind tour of the information lifecycle. The writing and submission of your reflections will be handled using the UW Catalyst Portfolio tool (the tool you are using here). Instructor comments on your reflections will be sent back to you using the same tool.

Graduates of the MLIS program at the Information School will build careers as librarians, archivists, web site developers, records managers, system designers, information brokers, policy advisors, researchers, and administrators in information organizations. They will work in a variety of settings: public, private, and free-lance. Based on your understanding of "information" and the information lifecycle, write three brief exposition on what it means to be a complete information professional. Specifically:

  • What values, skills, and knowledge do these individuals share in common in order to actively participate in a professional community that includes such a diverse spectrum of leaders and problem-solvers?
  • What unique attitudes and insights do information professionals contribute to information problems?
  • Should information professionals focus more on services provision or instruction in information literacy?

The assignment is due on September 7, 2003 (at midnight). In total, your reflections should not exceed 1,000 words (approximately 3-4 traditional pages).
