Independent Researcher – August 2005 – Present.
Search publicly available online full-text journals, citation databases, publisher websites, library catalogs and open digital collections. Retrieve citations, abstracts, statistics and full-texts (if available) based on topic given by the client. In cases where there is no publicly available full-text, provide links to journal or monograph record on the library catalog of the client’s institution. Format references into client’s specified style (e.g. APA). Package these into an EndNote database or an Excel spreadsheet and send to client via email or online workspace (e.g. BSCW).
Business Analyst – Bibliographic and Technical Services Department, Blackwell Book Services, Lake Oswego, OR. May 2007 – April 2008.
Elicited, analyzed, communicated and validated requirements for changes to business processes, policies and information systems. Researched and identified solutions for issues related to system-produced data products including MaRC records and table of contents. Researched current and future developments in bibliographic and technical services and identify market opportunities. Developed a database of invoicing instructions for the department and a database to map IT infrastructure and business processes. Managed a feasibility study related to future data products and services.
Independent Contractor/Cataloger - Library Associates (Remote/Online/Home-based). November 2005 - August 2007.
a) For a DDC reclassification of a foreign university's collection [11/2005 – 05/2006; 11/2006 – 08/2007]: Searched hundreds of online library databases using a Z39.50 client software. Checked for currency and accuracy of DDC numbers. If no DDC numbers were found, searched WebDewey and built class numbers as necessary. Entered DDC class numbers into the 082 field of MARC records using a MARC editor. Communicated with supervisor, prepared invoices, and sent finished files via email. Processed about 30,000 MARC records across the whole set of the DDC main classes
b) For cataloging of a state's department of transportation's information resources [05/2006 – 08/2006]: Performed both copy and original cataloging of technical reports related to research in transportation within a shared catalog environment using LC classification, LC subject headings, the Transportation Research Thesaurus, AACR2, as well as local rules and procedures. Involved use of OCLC utilities and a Sirsi/Dynix integrated library system.
Indexing Volunteer - MT 2-1-1 Project, Great Falls, MT (Remote/Online Directed Field Work). April 2005 - June 2005. Trained in indexing using the AIRS/INFO LINE taxonomy. Indexed about 150 social and community services for the Montana Community Resource Database using terms from the taxonomy customized for the Montana project. Suggested terms for inclusion into the taxonomy. Communicated with supervisors via email, postal mail, and by phone.
Cataloging Volunteer - Arts and Communication Magnet Academy, Beaverton, OR. October 2004 - May 2005.
Searched the Beaverton School District catalog (Horizon system) to check if an item already had a bibliographic record in the catalog. If so, created new item record and attached to bib record. Edited bib record if necessary. Created a new MARC record and linked to a new item record if no bibliographic record was found in the system. Used either Library of Congress Subject Headings or Sears Subject Headings for the subject fields. Attached barcodes and call numbers (DDC). Did other library tasks as needed such as weeding of the collection.
Student Assistant - Drug Effectiveness Review Project & US Preventive Service Task Force, Oregon EPC, OHSU, Portland, OR. November 2004 - March 2005.
Searched and retrieved articles from OHSU library's databases, electronic journals, and catalogs (based on a list of citations). Requested articles from old storage or via ILL as necessary. Printed or photocopied articles. Gave a copy to investigators and filed another copy in binders or folders. Filed electronic copies in EndNote. Entered retrieval and other codes in EndNote. Archived "libraries" of reviewed/annotated and copies of articles.
Library Clerk - Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR. 04/2003 - 08/2004 (Community Services Clerk/Page Workgroup); 11/2002 - 03/2003 (North Portland Branch); 10/2001 - 02/2002 (Holgate Branch). Performed circulation services wherever needed in the 16 branches of the Multnomah County Library but based in one of the branches (North Portland). Registered and welcomed new patrons. Checked out and checked in materials. Resolved disputes about fines and other charges on a patron's account. Documented transactions with patrons. Changed status of items in Dyna depending on whether the item is damaged, a problem shelf, a snag, missing, on trace, in transit, etc. Changed item variables in Dyna when applicable. Changed patron variable when applicable. Instructed patrons on managing their accounts (online, by phone, and in person). Placed, reviewed, changed status of and cancelled holds for patrons. Checked in, processed, and shelved holds. Attended meetings of the Community Services team of clerks and pages. Participated in solving problems in materials movement and processing as a member of the system-wide Materials Movement Task Force. Created and maintained the intranet site of the Community Services Clerk/Page Workgroup.
Computer Lab Assistant - North Portland Computer Lab, North Portland Branch, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR, 07/2002 - 10/2002. Signed in and assigned patrons to computers available for use. Received, over the phone, reservations for computer use and sign-ups for computer classes. Assisted patrons needing help with Microsoft Office applications, with Yahoo or Hotmail email accounts, and with Internet navigations and searches. Designed and coded the intranet site of the North Portland branch library. Also authored several of the text and image content and prepared documentation of the design and coding. Cleaned, set up, and put away computers in the lab.
Circulation Assistant - Cedar Mill Community Library, Portland, OR, 02/2002 - 08/2002. Registered and welcomed patrons to the community library which was averaging 85,000 circulated items a month. Checked out and checked in library items with the Polaris database software shared within the 15-member Washington County Cooperative Library System. Resolved disputes involving fines and items that were either missing, damaged, lost or claimed to have been returned. Processed and shelved holds and periodicals. Sorted and shelved checked-in library items. Communicated and coordinated closely with clerks and volunteers to perform the above tasks in a fluid work environment.

Software/Cataloging/Metadata Skills
- Advanced skills in HTML and CSS. Proficient with XML, JavaScript, Active Server Pages (ASP), SQL, and Microsoft Office applications. Working knowledge of Visual Basic, PHP and MySQL.
- Proficient with WebDewey (OCLC Connexion), BookWhere, MarcEdit, and Classification Web.
- Knowledgeable about rules of description using AACR2 and subject analysis using Library of Congress Subject Headings and Classification Schedules, the DDC, and MARC format.
